Associated thrombotic risks

Associated thrombotic risks

Coordinators: Dr Sylvie Deheul, Pr Annabelle Dupont (CHU Lille)

The interest of a working group dedicated to the thrombotic risks associated with nitrous oxide consumption lies in the urgent need to understand and prevent the serious complications associated with this practice.

Nitrous oxide, when used recreationally, can cause blood clotting disorders, increasing the risk of blood clots (thrombosis) that can lead to life-threatening conditions such as pulmonary embolism, stroke and heart attack.

The main tasks of this working group are manifold:

Conduct in-depth research to document the thrombotic effects of nitrous oxide.

This research will include studying the underlying mechanisms of nitrous oxide-induced thrombosis, the frequency of thrombotic events and associated risk factors.

Develop and standardize diagnostic protocols for the rapid and accurate identification of thrombotic risks in nitrous oxide users. These protocols will ensure early detection and appropriate intervention, thereby reducing serious complications.

Train healthcare professionals in new diagnostic protocols and best practices for managing patients at risk of thrombosis.

The working group will also focus on raising awareness among the public and healthcare professionals of the dangers of recreational nitrous oxide use and its effects on blood coagulation.

Develop clinical guidelines for the prevention and treatment of nitrous oxide thrombosis. These recommendations will include advice on anticoagulant treatment, emergency medical intervention and long-term prevention strategies.

Encourage collaboration between different specialists, including hematologists, cardiologists, neurologists and other healthcare professionals, for a multidisciplinary approach to thrombotic risk management.

By fulfilling these missions, the working group will make a significant contribution to improving patient care, reducing the risks associated with nitrous oxide consumption, and promoting safer, better-informed public health.
