Clinical and neurological consequences

Clinical and neurological consequences

Coordinators: Dr Anas Bennis (APHP, Paris), Dr Jean Paul Niguet (GHICL, Lille)

The interest of this working group dedicated to the clinical and neurological consequences of nitrous oxide consumption lies in the urgent need to understand and mitigate the harmful effects of this substance on public health.

Nitrous oxide, commonly used for recreational purposes, poses significant risks to the neurological and overall health of individuals, including cognitive damage, spinal cord disorders, and deficiencies in essential vitamins such as vitamin B12.

The main tasks of this working group are manifold:

Conduct in-depth research to document the clinical and neurological effects of nitrous oxide.

This includes studying the mechanisms of toxicity, the frequency of intoxication, and the clinical manifestations observed in patients.

Develop and standardize diagnostic protocols to facilitate rapid and accurate identification of nitrous oxide poisoning.

These protocols will help standardize diagnostic practices across different healthcare facilities, ensuring consistent and effective management.

Train healthcare professionals in new diagnostic protocols and best practices for patient care.

The working group will also focus on raising public and health professional awareness of the dangers of recreational nitrous oxide use.

Develop clinical guidelines for the treatment of nitrous oxide poisoning, including recommendations on medical interventions, supportive therapies, and neurological rehabilitation strategies.

Promote collaboration between different specialists, including neurologists, psychiatrists, toxicologists and other health professionals, to ensure a multidisciplinary approach to the management of intoxication cases.

By fulfilling these missions, the working group will make a significant contribution to improving patient care, reducing the risks associated with nitrous oxide consumption, and promoting safer, better-informed public health.
