Title: Raising awareness of the nitrous oxide poisoning care pathway for patient diagnosis, treatment and follow-up

We have carefully read the case review by McCormick et al. on nitrous oxide (N2O) poisoning, published in the recent issue of the Irish Journal of Medical Science and entitled and titled: "Nitrous oxide-induced myeloneuropathy: an emerging public health problem". The case series and discussion
interesting, but we'd like to add some suggestions and
and comments on the pathophysiology of nitrous oxide,
clinical and biological management:

  • The metabolic impact of N2O is complex and poorly understood
  • The neurological consequences are diverse
  • Vitamin supplementation should be used with caution
  • Patient follow-up must be based on biological analyses
